This 2.4 inch (6 cm) agathis Go board is an excellent choice if you're looking for an affordable single piece board. This particular make of board is used by professionals in Go tournaments throughout Korea. It's also the board used in most programs on Baduk TV (a Go TV channel). The board is made from a single piece of wood and, like most agathis boards, the playing surface has been painted. If you prefer to see the wood grain, we also have a shin kaya Go board with the same dimensions as this one. Agathis is a softwood which is also commonly known as kauri or dammer. It's quite a popular choice of wood for making Go boards. Because agathis is typically a darker red color, it's standard practice to paint the playing surface of the board so that it's a solid color. Some players, including professionals, find the pattern of the wood distracting if it's not painted. Agathis needs to be dried for a minimum of 3 years before it can be used to make Go boards. Wood that will be used to make thicker boards needs to be dried for even longer so that the wood won't easily change shape or crack after the board is finished. Any board thicker than 5 inches should be dried for at least 5 years. Some manufacturers cut corners when drying wood, to save money. This can result in boards that warp or crack easily later. We guarantee that all Go boards purchased from Go Game Guru have been dried properly.
