Goth-Uh-Gatlon City is Back & itโs Even Comic-Bookier Than Ever
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ I enjoyed this second instalment, though I do think I preferred the first one. As I said then and will say again, Iโm a sucker for an origin story. Novaโs personal development in this book from questioning her entire belief system; to defining who is an enemy to who is a friend; to discovering the boundaries of her own moral compass is really great. Adrian continued to blur his own lines between right and wrong and Max got even more awesome. I disliked how it ended and think itโs high time Nova was discovered โ purely because the drama is going to be so huge โ but I suppose the good news is her ruse really doesnโt have much time left at all if the ending can be depended on. Captain Chromium & the Dread Warden might just be my favourite gay parents ever. Screw questionable political agendas, I want them to adopt me. I was also really pleased with the representation in this book as we get a closer look at how they actually parent their kids and โ thank, the lord โ we managed it without conforming to sexuality-based stereotypes โ whoop, YA books. I really appreciated that. I think any scene with Frostbite and her cronies is infuriating but I will warn any sensitive readers (even if comic book fights donโt bother you) that we get some rather graphic torture description that made me uncomfortable at the time. Iโm looking forward to the next one, I really have no idea what kind of resolution I want out of all this. Redemption arcs are finite, after all. I only hope Meyer sticks to her word and doesnโt spin a fourth 600-page book out of the series. But for real โ where the bleep is my Renegades Graphic Novel? Do we have people on that yet??

Part 2 of lIght- hearted but engaging superhero story
I received a free ecopy of this book in return for an honest review. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity. At the point when I received this book, I hadnโt read book #1 Renegades, so I read the two books back to back. You could probably get away with starting at book #2 but youโd be missing a treat if you did. The Renegades series is about a world where there are a percentage of people called prodigies who develop extra powers. In the past two prodigy groups fought for control, the Anarchists and the Renegades. The Renegades won. Nova is an Anarchist, the niece of lead Anarchist, Ace Anarchy. She hates the Renegades because of what they have done to her family. She decides to go undercover as a Renegade in order to better know how to destroy them and re-establish what she sees as the freedom of anarchy. She is teams up with Adrian, the adopted son of the head Renegades. She is, however, unaware that Adrian has an agenda of his own. Nova and Adrian are attracted to one another and become increasingly close to finding each otherโs secrets out, which ratchets tension throughout the book. The opening chapters of Archenemies focus entirely on Adrian. Nova feels like sheโs not really there, and I missed her. Thereโs plenty of action to keep us busy but it isnโt till Chapter 6 that we finally get into Novaโs head again, and start seeing the flip side of this story. The theme of the supposed โsuperheroesโ behaving badly and โsupervillainsโ who are actually quite moral, is prominent throughout the books. For the most part the Anarchists are surprisingly benign and feel like victims rather than perpetrators. Meanwhile some of the Renegades are out and out bullies. This is not a new concept but it is handled well, leaving the reader with interestingly conflicted feelings about the characters. I found Nova particularly frustrating as she lived through the terror and devastation of the Age of Anarchy but stubbornly defends its purpose. At first I had a bit of trouble remembering names and characters. Every character has a name plus a prodigy name based on their special power. Nova has two prodigy names since she is undercover. I never, though, had trouble jumping from Nova to Adrianโs POV and back, which I have sometimes experienced in other books with multiple POVs. Some of the fight scenes read remind me of 60s Batman with Burt Ward. All that is missing are cartoon word pop-ups such as โPOWโ and โBAMโ. I was a fan of the old series though, so this just adds to the fun for me. This book, in fact both books, are is a quick read with short chapters that lure you into a cycle of โjust one more chapterโ until you suddenly realise youโve been reading for hours. Descriptions are very visual and easy on the imagination. The characters are likeable and the story engaging. If you like a good superhero story and fancy a change from the Marvel Universe, this series is lighter, funner, and altogether more human and definitely worth your time.

Wow! If you want to just enjoy the heck out of a reading experience, then by all means, read these books! Both of the Renegades stories have made it to my top levels in terms of loving the super-hero genre, loving a good but not sappy YA novel and just loving more action than you can shake a Stallone chin dimple at! Fantastic, can't wait for the conclusion of the trilogy!

I bought this because the first one is very enjoyable and amazing. This is the 2nd book of the series and my opinion it is better than the first one. Writing style is awsome. Very enjoyable and engaging as well.

This book was exactly what I needed! I truly did not expect myself to fall so in love with this book. When I first started it, I was a little worried that I wouldn't love it because lately I've been having a hard time keeping myself engaged with a book but from the moment I started this, it completely took over my life. It's been so long since I loved a book so much that I stayed up late to keep reading, that the first thing I did when I woke up was to reach for my book to continue reading. Honestly, for that feeling alone I want to give this book a five star. But I'm giving this a five star rating because it kept me engaged, it made me fall so deeply in love with these characters and most importantly, it gave me all the swoony romance scenes that were lacking in the first book. Also I really enjoy how this book looks at heroes and villains and shows how it's not all black and white. I love that it makes me look at things from different perspectives and to realize that when it comes down to it, there really isn't much of a difference between the villains and heroes. I will say that I find Nova's reasons for hating Renegade to be a bit childish even if I do completely understand her need to put the blame on them. But it's also plays a huge part into who she is today, and her beliefs on having powers in general. I love her perspective on things and I definitely agree to some degree on the way she thinks but I think she has some character development still to happen because she tends to only see things from her perspective. I love Adrian and I really can't think of one negative thing to say about him. I love that we really see him starting to question everything and he starts reevaluating the way he's always seen the world and starting to think that maybe there is room for improvement in the rules of the Renegades. I also absolutely love the way he adores Nova, so many times while reading this book he made me dreamy sigh and grin the cheesiest grin at the things he said or did for Nova <3 I'm so freaking happy I decided to start this book yesterday. It's honestly the best decision I've made in a long time. And now I'm going to go cry in a corner because I have to wait a whole freaking year for the conclusion :(
